Why do Accra buildings get damp?
Three main causes: rising damp (ground moisture drawn up through masonry walls via capillary action — common in areas with high water table like parts of Kasoa, Spintex, and low-lying Tema); penetrating damp (rain driven through external walls, flat roofs, or failed render); condensation (moisture in warm air condensing on cooler surfaces — common in poorly ventilated buildings).
Can I just paint over damp walls?
No. Damp-proof paints slow moisture penetration but do not treat the cause. The moisture continues to move through the wall, eventually breaking through or causing structural damage.
